Note Taking

This week I used two note taking strategies. I used Plug-In Notes, and 1 Plus 3 notes in PHI 192. I used these strategies in Philosophy because I thought they would help me learn the different theories the best. I'm a visual learner so I really like 1 Plus 3 notes because of the chart, and I also really liked Plug-In Notes since its so similar to 20 Min Test Prep. For plug in notes what I did was I would take my regular notes in class and after each main topic the professor would talk about I would create a chart. One half of the chart is for questions and the other half is for the answers. Its similar to 20 Min Test prep the only difference is you are doing this during class while you are taking notes. At the end of the week you should go through the plug in notes and answer the questions to make sure you know the material. I think this strategy will really help me out because it forces me to really pay attention to some of the questions the professor asks when giving the notes. I take a lot of the questions he asks and use them as the plug in notes. For 1 plus 3 notes what I did was at the end of each class I would go through all of the notes just to review. Then I would take all the important main topics and write it down on the left hand side of the chart. I would then take some of the more detailed information and write it down on the right hand side of the chart. After I was done writing the notes I would make about 5 questions and put them on the bottom of the chart. At the end of the week I would go through and answer the questions. This strategy really helped me because it forces me to be engaged with the notes even after the class is over. It gives me good review and helps me anticipate test questions.

  1. I really like the way you used this strategy. I tried it on one course, but I didn't like it as much as the Plug In notes.

  2. I had trouble writing down enough details for each of my terms when using the 1 plus 3 notes. Glad it worked for you though.
